This three-hour course will provide participants the requisite theoretical background in the art of debriefing. Practical suggestions and guidelines for debriefing will be presented. Participants will also view a simulation that will serve as an example to then be debriefed by the course leaders.

Basic Scenario Design And Creation in the HPS6 Software

This six-hour course will provide participants the opportunity to program a scenario they have designed into the HPS6 software. Working in small groups that are facilitated by a METI faculty member, a scenario will be designed and scripted into the software. Use of METI Education and Training computers will be utilized in this course.

This six-hour course will discuss pre-packaged moulage sold with METI products, as well as new technologies being introduced by METI for use on our simulators. Demonstration of products will be accomplished during the session with interactive creations from participants.

All in the Family: Facilitating Learning Across the Lifespan NEW!
Monday, March 16
9AM - 4PM
This interactive and dynamic course will feature the use of the Program for Nursing Curriculum Integration (PNCI) in education. Included will be a discussion of how the features of the simulator and the physiologic modeling create a simulated response to meet learning objectives. Creation of a simulated environment and moulage will be demonstrated as a means to create suspension of disbelief. The participants will have an opportunity to participate in a simulated clinical experience using content from the PNCI with our family of simulators. The art of debriefing will be discussed and demonstrated using the METIVision.

This twelve-hour course is comprised of a combination of lectures, small group breakouts, group presentation and group debriefing that are designed to walk the participant through the development, execution and evaluation of a given curriculum. The purpose of this course is to explore a systematic approach to assessment, design, development, implementation and evaluation of curriculum. The components of the systematic approach, facilitator, learner, environment and learning materials all supply feedback in the way of inputs and outputs to reach a desired outcome, providing exceptional educational experiences to adult learners.

Louis H. Oberndorf
President and CEO
Louis H. Oberndorf is Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of METI. His vision for METI is to develop learning tools that positively impact the education of health care professionals and ultimately improve patient safety and save lives. Oberndorf’s leadership directed the growth of METI from a technology startup with five employees in 1996 to the world’s leading medical education and simulation company with more than 200 employees today.
METI’s technology and educational tools are used in 2500 organizations worldwide including leading medical schools, such as the Mayo Clinic, Harvard, UCLA, Cleveland Clinic, Mount Sinai, Stanford and others.
From the beginning, Oberndorf has contributed his knowledge and experience to various programs focused on advancing health care education. Currently he serves on the Advisory Board of the Harvard Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, Massachusetts, Texas Woman’s University Advisory Board for the establishment of a Center for Telenursing and Health Informatics in Denton, Texas, and the Medical College of Georgia Steering Committee for the School of Nursing in Augusta, Georgia.
Prior to the incorporation of METI, he was an executive with Loral Corporation serving as Vice President of Marketing and Senior Vice President of Business Development where he was responsible for strategic coordination, start-up initiatives and transferring Loral’s defense and aerospace technology to the commercial sector.
Oberndorf holds an MBA in Management from the University of Utah and a BA in History from the University of Portland. He completed the Senior Management Executive Program at the University of Michigan. Additionally, he served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1976, achieving the rank of Captain. Oberndorf resides in Sarasota, Florida with his wife, Rosemary.

Secretary James Peake, MD
Secretary James Peake, M.D., was nominated by President George W. Bush to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs on October 30, 2007. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on December 14, 2007, and served from December 2007 through January 2009.
Dr. Peake was the principal advocate for veterans in the U.S. government and directed the nation’s second largest Cabinet Department, responsible for a nationwide system of health care services, benefits programs, and national cemeteries for America’s veterans and dependents. During his tenure VA employed more than 280,000 people at hundreds of medical centers, nursing homes, benefits offices, and national cemeteries throughout the country. VA’s budget for fiscal year 2009 was $97.5 billion.
A St. Louis, Mo., native, Peake received his Bachelor of Science degree from U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1966 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. Following service in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division where he was awarded the Silver Star, a Bronze Star with “V” device and the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, Peake entered medical school at Cornell University in New York. He was awarded a medical doctorate in 1972.
Peake began his Army medical career as a general surgery resident at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He retired from the Army in 2004, following service as a cardiac surgeon and commander of several medical posts culminating in his appointment as U.S. Army Surgeon General from 2000 to 2004. As Army Surgeon General, Peake commanded 50,000 medical personnel and 187 army medical facilities worldwide. Prior to that, he served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School, the largest medical training facility in the world with more than 30,000 students annually.
After retiring as a Lieutenant General, Peake served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Project Hope, a non-profit international health foundation operating in more than 30 countries. Just prior to his nomination as Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Peake served as Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of Directors for QTC, one of the largest private provider of government-outsourced occupational health and disability examination services in the nation.
Dr. Peake is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American College of Cardiology. He has been honored with the Order of Military Merit; the “A” Professional Designator; and the Medallion, Surgeon General of the United States.
